Joe Biden spoke on MSNBC's Morning Joe this week to discuss gun control and said he believes that most Americans own guns not because they need them but because they like the feeling owning a gun gives them.
"It used to be we were dealing almost exclusively with hunters," Joe Biden said on the Morning Joe TV program. "There's a whole new sort of group of individuals now who, I don't know what the numbers are, that never hunt at all but they own guns for one of two reasons: self protection or they just like the feel of that AR-15 at the range."
"They like the way it feels. You know, it's like driving a Ferrari," Biden said on April 11.
Biden has essentially become the Obama Administration's key point man regarding the issue of gun control, one of the biggest issues going on in the U.S. President Obama has talked on a number of occasions about increasing gun control in the U.S. but when it comes to important meetings regarding the issue, Biden is usually the one that shows up.
While his argument during the Morning Joe program wasn't new, comparing gun owners to those that own sport cars brings up an interesting point. If it is true that most people just like the feeling of owning a gun over actually needing one, than limiting the amount of weapons a person can own or even banning all major assault weapons throughout the country wouldn't be that big of a deal.
"I mean so far ahead," Biden said regarding public support for gun control proposals. "You saw it in immigration. You saw it in marriage issues. You're seeing it now, the public has moved to a different place."
In a 68-31 vote on Thursday, senators rejected an effort by to block debate on Democrats' gun control legislation, a measure which was backed by President Barack Obama.
Senators formally opened debate on the bill, lawmakers' response to the mass shooting in December at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., resulting in the most "ambitious effort" to limit gun violence in nearly two decades according to the Associated Press.
The bill would require every person who wants to purchase a gun to go through a background check, stiffen federal laws towards illicit firearms sales, and would provide more money for school safety measures.
Biden did bring up during the interview that while purchasing a gun and ammunition for the weapon is not currently illegal, the government does have the right to deny certain weapons and bullets from being sold if they see fit.
So what do you think? Should all guns or certain guns be banned throughout the country? Or should we leave things the way they are?
