Volvo Car Group's new engine family Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA) will debut this fall with the worlds-first i-ART technology that will reportedly help cut down on fuel consumption in new diesel engines.

"Increasing the rail pressure to an exceptionally high 2,500 Bar, while adding the i-ART technology, can be described as the second step in the diesel revolution. It is a breakthrough comparable to when we invented the groundbreaking lambda sensor for the catalytic converter in 1976. It's another world-first for Volvo," said Derek Crabb, Vice President Powertrain Engineering at Volvo Car Group in a company press release.

i-Art allows for pressure feedback from each individual fuel injector instead of using a single pressure sensor in common rail according to a company press release.

Through a combination of i-ART technology and higher injection pressure  customers will now have an engine with lower emissions, improved fuel economy, powerful sound character according to a company press release.

"We will create smaller, more intelligent engines with so much power that they will turn V8s into dinosaurs," said Crab according to a company press release. "Our four-cylinder engines will offer higher performance than today's six-cylinder units and lower fuel consumption than the current four-cylinder generation. On top of that, electrification will bring us up into power figures in today's V8-territory."

Volvo has promised their first 8-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy and drivability, along with another new addition to range.

Crab is also positive that Volvo's expanding range of electric powertrains and four-cylinder engines will replace larger five and six-cylinder options, without giving up anything that customers are used to.

The new engines will be produced at Volvo Car Group's high-tech engine plant located in Skovde, Sweden.
