The very first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was auctioned off last week, going for approximately $1 million to Rick Hendrick according to Chevrolet.

"Corvettes are a passion of mine," said Hendrik at the auction according to NitroBahn. " I love those cars so much, and to have the first Corvettes from the new generation means so much to me."

Hendrick owns one of the most successful NASCAR teams and has a well-known passion for Chevrolet Corvettes. Not only was he the winning bidder for the Corvette Convertible but he also outbid everyone else to own the first Chevrolet Corvette Stingray back in February.

In all, he's spent $2.1 million on new Corvette vehicles.

The $1 million will go directly towards the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. GM has contributed over $6 million the past 15 years according to a company press release.

The new Chevy Corvette convertible won't go on sale to the public until the third quarter of this year at the earliest.

"I paid a little more than I wanted for that car," Hendrick said at the auction according to Speed.com. "But I owe so much to Corvette for getting me into the car business in the first place."

Barrett-Jackson charges no auction fees for charity sales.

Chevrolet decided to donate the "coveted "sports car as part of General Motors' support for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and their 31st annual dinner. All of the sale proceeds will benefit the Cancer Institute, which is one of the only 41 National Cancer Institute/comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S. according to a press release.

"The commitment of GM and the GM Foundation to further the Karmanos Cancer Institute's innovative cancer research and exceptional patient care is nothing short of magnificent," said Gerold Bepler , M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Karmanos according to the company press release.

As part of a deal for winning the new car, a ceremony will take place shortly after the vehicle is finished where Hendrick will start up the new Stingray for the first time.
