A school bus carrying elementary school children rolled over Monday morning killing the driver and injuring multiple students according to the Associated Press. Approximately nine children were injured, six of them seriously, in the crash in a mountainous area of northern New Mexico.

Authorities have yet to determine if the driver gad a heart attack before or because of the crash according to state police. The driver has yet to be identified.

The nine students injured are from Ojo Caliente Elementary according to police officials according to the Associated Press. Six of the injured students were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. The victims conditions are currently unknown as of press time.

"It appears the bus driver may have had a heart attack or some other medical event that caused the accident," said Jake Arnold, spokesman for the Rio Arriba Sheriff's Office. "That's our initial assessment, but we cannot tell for sure."

"We have had additional witnesses come forward and provide additional testimony as to what they observed happened," said Sgt. Sara Balmes according to Fox. "We have disputes as to the color of the light when the bus entered the intersection at this time."

It's currently unclear whether or not there were other injuries or what caused the rollover in the first place.

The Mesa Vista school bus rolled over on State Road 11 near Vallecitos in Carson National Forest according to New Mexico State Police.

The Rio Arriba Sheriff's Department and state police are at the scene north of Espanola. Investigators are planning on looking into an autopsy report to determine if any other substances like alcohol contributed to the incident.
