A three-year-old girl is dead after being crushed by a closing garage door in Washington, D.C. according to NBC News.
The incident took place at around 4 p.m. in Charles County on April 5 according to local police officials.
Authorities have yet to finish their investigation but they believe the little girl hit the control button for the garage door while playing with it and tried to run out the door as it was closing.
The girl's mother, who heard the door close, was concerned when she didn't hear someone come inside the house shortly after. She went to the garage to see if someone was in there and found her daughter "pinned" under the door.
She was pronounced dead as soon as paramedics and police arrived to the scene.
Police don't feel that the mother had anything to do with the incident and have treated it as an accidental death, "possibly due to asphyxiation" according to NBC News.
"The door came down and pinned her and ended up asphyxiating her," Charles County Sherriff spokeswoman Diane Richardson said according to WUSA9.
The door's sensors were being tested late Friday to find out why the girl's presence wasn't picked up as most garage door models released the last decade or so come with a motion sensor to prevent such occurrences from happening.
"It's awful, it's terrible that something like that could happen," said one neighbor according to WUSA9. "That should never have happened. It was a total accident. It's just terrible."
Initial reports stated that the victim was a 5-year-old, but the latest records listed her as a 3-year-old according to NBC News.
