It's Thursday again and this only means another teaser trailer for the highly anticipated 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. Entitled "No Ice," this teaser reveals the drag demon will be equipped with a distinct cooling system, allowing its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine to perform as if it is winter.
There are many firsts for the Demon, and this time, it will be the first ever production car to feature a liquid-to-air charge air cooler chiller system. It's not rocket science, by the way.
In Drag Mode, 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will use the cabin's air conditioner to cool the charge air. To put it simply, we all know that the Demon will be wearing the largest functional hood scope in a production car, again the first of many. It will also sport air inlets that are integrated with each of the headlights. All these will significantly help reduce the temperature of the air before it actually enters the supercharger.
Now, because heat has always been an issue, this single feature will surely sit well with drag racers. Ever notice the bags of ice packed around engines and air intakes?
This is because cool air is denser. Thus, there is more air that can be shoved into the engine which can be mixed with the fuel. And then it makes more horsepower. Now, if air is compressed by the supercharger, it generates more heat than you can imagine.
But there is a downside to this. Air conditioning and other accessory systems usually draw their power from the engine. In fact, drag strips are not too excited at air conditioning on track due to the pool of water they leave behind.
But look on the bright side, Dodge claims that the system can reduce intake air temperatures by up to 45 degrees F. This could be more than enough to amp up the already powerful hp.
There are still plenty of details left before the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon's official reveal on April 11 during the New York Auto Show. There is still one more teaser before then. So, stay tuned.
