A body of a missing North Carolina woman was found inside a crashed vehicle, three days after it was ordered to be towed award from a crash scene according to the Associated Press.
Carolyn Watkins, 62, of Clayton was reported missing by her son on April 1 after she didn't show up for work.
In a police report filed on Mar. 29 by N.C. Highway Patrol Cop Marlon Williams stated that she crashed her 2000 Pontiac in a deep ditch near Smithfield, which is 30 miles from Raleigh. The vehicle was found on Mar. 29 with the air bags deployed.
"Note: No driver at the scene of this collision," Williams said in his report according to the Associated Press.
The vehicle was towed away and moved to a lot for storage, where it remained with Watkins inside until the body was found on April 1 by Smithfield police, who were searching for clues.
Watkins was last seen alive on Mar. 28. Her son, Al Parker, is now left to wonder if his mother could have been saved if the officer had found her in the car sooner.
"I'm thinking she could still have been alive," Parker said according to the Associated Press. "How do you not look in the car? When you pulled the car out, how do you not see a body in the car?"
Williams, who is a 9-year-veteran of the Highway Patrol, was placed on paid administrative duty pending the outcome of the internal review. An investigation will be conducted with the help pf the State Bureau Investigation unit.
The patrol has refused to give any further detail about the incident. The Dustin Towing and Recovery company has yet to comment about the incident.
"We will release accurate information to the public as soon as available and appropriate," Public Safety Commissioner Frank Perry said in a brief written statement according to the Associated Press. "At this early stage, our main concern is to conduct a thorough and professional investigation so we can determine exactly what happened."
