U.S. safety regulators have started investigating complaints that the rear suspension frames can rust and eventually fail on Hyundai Sonata midsize vehicles released from 2006 through 2008 according to the Associated Press.

The investigation involves approximately 393,000 vehicles according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The NHTSA claims they received at least six complaints of suspension failures, three of which took place going highway speeds.

The investigation was officially opened on Mar. 25. No crashes or injuries have been reported so far but two of the failures reportedly activated the cars' electronic stability control systems.

Hyundai said in a press statement that it's "too early to draw conclusions" about the issues and current complaints with the vehicle as no defect has been found yet.

The automotive company has cooperated with the NHTSA and is determined to "take necessary action" to make their customers are safe while operating their vehicles.

The NHTSA stated that rust in the frame can cause control arm failures. There next plan of action will be to determine if a recall is necessary according to the Associated Press.

Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor stated that customers with a Hyundai Sonata released in the previously mentioned years can take their vehicles to their local Hyundai dealership if they feel something may be wrong with their car.

One issue reported by the NHTSA came from an individual living in Pittsburgh who said that their 2006 Sonata's rear swerved while being driven and the electronic stability control light came on.

The owner took the vehicle to a local mechanic, who found that the rear frame was corroded and cracked on sides, causing the rear tires to wear too early. The lower control arms, rear tires, and other suspension parts had to be replaced according to the Associated Press.
