Ford Motor Company has opened a challenge to software developers to create the "best movable or web-based apps" that can help customers easily access personal fuel-economy information.

The winning developer will receive approximately $50,000 according to Ford.

"We see the car as a platform on which others can create and build solutions tailored to individual needs," said Venkatesh Prasad, Ford senior technical leader for Open Innovation according to EarthTechling. "Vehicle personalization has been around since the dawn of the car, but OpenXC puts Ford at the leading edge of taking it to the next level," he added.

By using the app to obtain the fuel economy data, customers can compare numbers, share them with their friends and loved ones or just simply learn how to properly optimize their fuel usage.

What's odd about the contest is that Ford has been known to release incorrect fuel-economy information about many of their vehicles, and has even been sued over it recently.

Vehicles that Ford has released recently that have not lived up to fuel-economy predictions include the popular C-Max Hybrid and Fusion models. Ford explained recently that the inaccuracies are due to driving conditions and it all depends on tendencies a specific driver has when operating the vehicle.

Other companies like Hyundai have also been sued within the last year or so for false fuel economy numbers.

Submissions for the challenge start on Apr. 24, 2013. To enter you must download the OpenXC software development kit from Ford.
