The 2014 Dodge Durango was unveiled at the New York Auto Show today, Mar. 28, with a new eight-speed automatic transmission that could change the way similar vehicles are manufactured according to a company press release.
The new Durango goes on saw in the third quarter, though pricing for the vehicle was not announced.
"When the Durango was first launched in 1998, it represented a breakthrough in power, size and style," said Reid Bigland , President and CEO - Dodge Brand in a company press release. "Now for 2014, we're upping the ante by making it our most technologically advanced, fuel efficient and dramatically styled Durango ever.
Durango's standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is paired with the new standard eight-speed transmission to deliver up to a 9 percent improvement in fuel-economy compared to the previous model.
The standard flex-fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine generates 290 and 260 lb.-ft. of torque according to Dodge. The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine produces a" best-in-class" 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque.
Honda expects the new model to compete with similar vehicles like the 2013 Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Traverse. The Pilot is equipped with a five-speed automatic, whereas the Traverse and Explorer are equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions.
The eight-speed is going to make other company's think about how they should be making SUVs.
With fog lamps, a crosshair grille texture, new 18 to 20-inch wheel designs, and LED running lights Dodge definitely stepped up their game for the 2014 model.
"With countless class-exclusive features and best-in-class attributes, the new 2014 Durango represents the ultimate no-compromise full-size SUV," said Bigland in the company press release.
The Durango will be offered in five trim levels according to Bigland: R/T, Citadel, SXT, Rallye, and a new Limited model.
Fuel economy expectation numbers have yet to be released for the 2014 model.
Other features include a heated steering wheel, a 5 to 8.4-inch touchscreen with class-exclusive Uconnect Access, capless fuel fill, and a fully integrated tow hitch according to Dodge.
The vehicle can tow up to 7,400 pounds with the V- or 6,200 pounds with the V-6.
