Earlier this month, the Honda Civic Type R made its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Today, the first production 2017 Type R was unveiled at this year's AutoCon in Los Angeles.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R is the most anticipated ultimate iteration of one of Honda's best-selling vehicles. Its debut on AutoCon was the first time the Type R went on display in the United States.
The AutoCon has always been a big event made by automotive enthusiasts since 2010. It is an annual event made by and for automotive enthusiasts. It has recently been held in different states and cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, New York City and New Jersey.
Its primary goal is to help attendees learn, converse and share a common interest with one another. An excerpt from the AutoCon's website reads:
"From the exclusive vehicles on display to the one-of-a-kind 'drive up' main stage, the goal of AutoCon is to create a positive environment where attendees of the event can converge, learn, and share common interests with one another. With its core focus on the automotive industry, AutoCon is a place where extraordinary vehicle builds are debuted, product launches happen, news is announced, and the future is introduced."
The new Honda Civic Type R shares the body of the 5-door hatchback variant of the well known tenth-generation global Honda Civic platform. Under the hood, it is equipped with a 2.0-liter DOHC engine made in the United States.
The engine will be direct-injected and turbocharged i-VTEC in-line 4-cylinder engine. It produces up to 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm.
The said engine will be paired exclusively to a short throw 6-speed manual transmission with rev matching capability. The transmission employs automatic throttle blips to provide smoother shifts and power delivery.
The new Civic Type R will also be equipped with a new single-mass flywheel reduces clutch inertia by 25 percent as opposed to the previous (European) Type R. It will also feature a lower final gear ratio is employed to improve acceleration response.
According to Honda, the Type R will be available late spring. It will come with a mid-$30,000 price tag.
