Audi Sport, formerly called Audi Quattro, makers of the Audi RS line, are launching about eight new models this year. And most of these cars are sports utility vehicles (SUV).
Starting this new line of Audi RS models is the Audi RS5, as mentioned in Motor Authority. The car was launched just recently at the Geneva Motor Show.
The 2017 Audi RS5 represents a new generation of high performance "racing sport" cars by Audi. But, Left Lane News reported that the RS badge was usually placed on passenger cars, except for the RS Q3 crossover.
Now, the Audi RS has found a new line - that of sports utility vehicles. In fact, new Audi Sport Head Stephan Winkelmann said the Audi RS SUV crossover will be more of the norm than the exception from now on.
The new 2017 Audi RS5 is supposed to be a lighter and faster coupe than its predecessors, reported Express Co. UK. Doing away with its predecessor's V-8 engine, the 2017 Audi RS5 sports twin, turbocharged V-6 engines.
Moreover, the Audi RS5 has 450 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. At 0 to 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 155 miles per hour, this is the SUV crossover to buy.
Winkelmann said the car's V-6 bi-turbo has been developed specially for this model and has increased its performance efficiency. It is also 60kg lighter, mainly because of its carbon fiber roof.
Winkelmann is so placed to head Audi Sport, having been the head of Lamborghini, where he developed the coming Urus SUV, reported Car and Driver. Following his vision of more SUVs coming into the RS line, the upcoming Q7 and the Q8 are expected to have the RS treatment.
With RS SUVs coming into the market, Audi is expected to go head on with competitors BMW X5M and X6M. Throw in also Mercedes-AMG GLE63, Lamborghini's Urus and the Porsche Cayenne.
