A U.K. girl discovered a dinosaur species who "stumbled" across its remains when she was just five-years-old. Scientists rewarded the young girl by letting her name the new dinosaur.
The remains were found four years ago by Daisy Morris on the beaches of Isle Wight according to SkyNews. Morris made the find while out with her family along Atherfield Beach on the south coast of the Isle of Wight according to the Daily Mail.
After finding the remains, Morris and her family took their discovery to a local dino expert Martin Simpson.
"It just shows that, continuing a long tradition in palaeontology, major discoveries can be made by amateurs, often by being in the right place at the right time," said Simpson according to the Daily Mail.
Simpson and his colleges at the University of Southampton studied the fossil and determined it was a new species. For the last five years, experts Darren Naish and Gareth Dyke have been studying the fossil, focusing on even the smallest of details before publishing their conclusion.
According to their findings, the dino was the size of a crow and had wings.
Morris chose the name Vectidraco daisymorrisae according to the Associated Press. Vectidraco means "dragon from the Isle of Wight" whereas the rest of it is named after Morris, now nine, herself.
'When Daisy and her family brought the fossilised remains to me in April 2009, I knew I was looking at something very special. And I was right,' Simpson said according to SkyNews. "The fossil turned out to be a completely new genus and species of small pterosaur, a flying reptile from 115 million years ago in the Lower Cretaceous period, which because of the island's eroding coastline, would without doubt have been washed away and destroyed if it had not been found by Daisy."
The family decided to donate the remains to the Natural History Museum so the whole word could see the new dinosaur.
