At least six suspected illegal immigrants were killed and nine others were injured when a truck being chased by police in South Texas crashed into a security barrier at Naval Station Kingsville this week according to the Associated Press.
Kingsville police were chasing the truck on Mar. 20 when the driver of the vehicle turned onto the road to the Naval Air Station and drove right past a guard near the entrance according to air station spokesman Jon Gagne.
"They were probably just looking for an escape route," said Gagne according to the Associated Press. Gagne added that the road into the air station is "not that different from any other road" especially at night.
Gagne said a pop-up barrier around a third of a mile from the gate was activated, and the truck, driving a total of 15 people, crashed right into it. No one from the military or the law enforcement agencies were hurt.
When the truck crashed into the barrier, the people in the truck bed were thrown into the cab according to Gange.
"That's exactly what the barrier is designed to prevent," Gagne said, when asked about the driver according to CNN. "It's quite possible this guy didn't even know where he was."
Department of Public Safety Senior Cpt. Charlie Ramirez said the driver was among the many that were injured. The conditions of the survivors have not been released as of press time, nor have the names of the individuals who have died.
The victims were from Honduras and Guatemala according to Greg Palmore, a spokesman with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
There is no evidence to support the rumors going around that the truck had planned to harm the naval base. Kingsville is approximately 40 miles southwest of Corpus Christi according to a report by the Associated Press.
