A 12-year-old girl showed up to school with $20,000 in cash in her bag pack this week and began handing out "hundreds of dollars" to classmates according to the Associated Press.
The police report states that the situation took place at a 6th Grade Academy Building in Taylor, Michigan where a student, whose name has yet to be released, gave away money that she claims was just "given to her" the day before.
Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi stated that the school principal found out about the money because she was handing it out to others like it was candy. Some students received as much as $500 from the girl according to Sclabassi's press statement.
"The principal became aware of this when the girl started distributing some of the cash to some fellow students. As high as $500 to some students," Sclabassi said according to UPI.com.
The girl confessed that she got the money from a friend in her town who lives across the street from her.
Police have the money in their possession as of press time and plan on holding on to it until the family who it belongs to can explain how the little girl came across the money and what it was to be used for before she got her hands on it according to ABC.
"The situation that took place at the Sixth Grade Academy Building was truly an unusual one. We do not have a specific protocol for this type of situation. There was no threat to the student body in the building and the matter is currently in the hands of the Taylor Police Department," said Taylor School District assistant superintendent Teresa D. Winnie according to ClickOnDetroit.com.
