Honda Civic Hybrid models have been called "unreliable" according to an article by Consumer Reports as many of the cars can suffer from "premature high-voltage battery pack failures."
Consumer Reports previously stated that Hybrid models released up until 2011 were reliable and worth purchasing but a new survey proves otherwise.
The 2009 Hybrid model for example doesn't fair well against its top competitors. In a year-long survey, 20 percent of 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid drivers needed to replace their battery.
"The Civic Hybrid, which has been a reliable car overall in most years, has a big problem with its drive battery," states the Consumer Reports article. "The 2009 model was the worst: Almost one in five owners needed a replacement hybrid battery in our 12-month survey period."
Honda offers an 8-year, 100,000 mile warranty for Civic Hybrids, which increases to 10 years in select states according to Consumer Reports. Many of the vehicles that require a battery replacement are no longer covered under the 8-year warranty, costing people approximately $2,000 to $4,000 in repairs.
Approximately 10 percent of 2003, 2004 and 2010 Civic Hybrid owners reported that they had to replace their battery in under a year's worth of driving as well according to AutoGuide.
The company also announced that a software update was issued to "protect" older models from premature battery failures, but this hasn't worked for all models as of yet.
"We are sorry to read that some of your Honda Civic Hybrid subscribers have experienced IMA battery issues during their ownership," Honda said in an email to Consumer Reports. " While the majority of Honda owners experience very few problems with their vehicles, we regret the inconvenience that any repair imposes on our customers."
