Riverdale is an American teen drama television series based on characters by the Archie Comics. The TV show premieres on The CW this week, and here’s why you should check it out.
As reported by Comic Vine, Riverdale has much more to offer than a typical teen drama. The characters of the show are familiar to readers of the comics. The chosen actors do a great job in making the characters come to life. The usual gang of Archie, Betty, and Veronica are all present in the show. As per usual, every drama has to have at least one evil character to cause a problem, and that is where Cheryl Blossom comes in play.
The story revolves around highs school elements. There are different social structures, trying to fit in, dealing with shaming bullies and all the usual high school problems. The reason that makes the show more interesting is Archie’s secret relationship and a murder mystery. At first glance, Riverdale seems like a perfect town, but with the murder, the darkness underneath starts bubbling towards the surface.
As told by Inverse, the show has plenty of dark and gothic elements. Every character has a sub-plot that contains nods to the gothic. For instance, Veronica’s mother deceives her daughter and starts an affair with Archie’s father. Betty’s mother gleefully speaks of wishing she had murdered Jason. Former teacher Ms. Grundy has a predatory penchant for teen boys.
Seeing the characters and their personalities unfold, coupled with the secrets of the town is what makes this show so intriguing. It keeps you guessing who’s responsible for the murder, what Veronica’s mom is hiding, what will people think of Archie’s summer activities if they find out? Each episode of Riverdale gives you a reason to return and watch the next one. Even if you haven’t read any of the comics before, Riverdale is worth checking out.
