Race car maker Porsche announces it is building an electric or electric battery-powered car called the Mission E Sedan to achieve its objective of producing an electric sedan. The Porsche Mission E sedan will be a tough contender against Tesla who is already manufacturing and operating an electric car Tesla Model S.
Stuff website reported that Porsche Global Chief Oliver Blume said that the Porsche EV (electronic vehicle) is on track on its 2018 manufacturing target. Blume said that last year, the company had decided to manufacture not just an electric sedan but also other vehicle models until 2025. This even includes a potential SUV model said, Blume.
Blume said the Porsche Mission E - the term they gave to the electric vehicle project - will produce a car that has 600 kilowatts horsepower (450kw) and a distance of 500 km. He also said that Porsche will decide in 2017 whether they are going to assign a 3 digit number for the EV model like its 911 Carrera and 718 Boxster, or just a name like its Cayenne SUV and Macan.
But can the Porsche Mission E actually race on the track with a battery pack? CNET reported that Detlev von Platen, Porsche board member and former CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said this is possible. CNET cited the case of Tesla Model S, the first commercial electric vehicle, wherein there is fantastic acceleration after every lap. However, the model gets too warm up after so many laps, thus insinuating that EV models actually take some time to recharge as well.
Von Platen said Porsche is harnessing its advanced technology that would enable EV car owners to recharge their batteries in only 15 minutes. He also said that Porsche is not just creating another electric car. They are producing a Porsche car with an electric engine, which he asserts is a different approach.
Porsche, the 2nd biggest source of VW's profit, is allocating USD1.1 billion to build the Porsche Mission E, reported Peninsula Qatar. Also, Porsche is targeting to improve sales with the upcoming release of the Porsche Mission E Sedan.
