Kia Motor's latest concept car is turning heads and raising eyebrows across the showroom floor at the 83rd Geneva International Motor Show with its muscular design an impressive four-wheel drive hybrid powertrain.
The Provo concept car looks like a muscle car version of a Mini Cooper and Citroen DS3 crossbreed.
Gregory Guillaume, chief designer at Kia's European styling base in Frankfurt said in a press statement that the Provo is "an emotional and muscular car aimed at delivering pure fun and performance for today's city-based enthusiast driver who longs for the curves of the open road."
Most of the car's muscle comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that puts out 201 horsepower on the front axle. But the Provo packs a bit of extra punch on the rear axle as well, a 44 horsepower electric motor can add a bit more thrust when needed and can transform the sporty speedster into an all-wheel-drive beast. The Provo will also run at low speeds in electric-only mode.
Inside, the Provo's cabin is composed of carbon fiber and aluminum. The dashboard is made of a single piece of carbon fiber which, intentionally, does not hit the floor in order to accentuate the car's polished aluminum floor rests and pedals. The dashboard features large analog displays and a smaller central display unit.
"The interior is very, very black - as we believe it should be to allow drivers to focus on the experience. But we have also looked to make the functional aspects of the car fit the modern demands of today's motorists," Guillaume said.
The interior's clean design is enhanced by the lack of a shifting column in the center of cabin. The Provo uses a DTC gearbox that allowed designers to get rid of the floor mounted gearbox and put the controls on the steering column.
Perhaps the most striking design element of the car is the front grill and headlights, which takes Kia's signature 'tiger nose" design to a new level by having programmable LED headlights behind the triangular "eyes." The lights contain more than 850 LEDs and can be used as daytime running lights, full beams and even humorous animated decorative displays.
