An 82-foot Californian luxury sailboat owner discovered his yacht was stolen after seeing it on a television newscast according to Reuters.

The sailboat got stuck in shallow water Pacifica State Beach, C.A., where authorities took two men and a woman off the boat and arrested them according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

The three individuals reportedly stole the boat, loaded it with beer, pizza and other foods before setting sail. Shortly after however, Leslie Gardner, 63, Dario Mira, 54, and Lisa Modawell, 56, phoned for help after the boat got stuck on a sandbar in shallow water at low tide.

A few surfers had paddled out in the water near the boat to help them out, battling 4 to 5 foot waves according to Reuters.

A television report ran about the incident, and the owner of the boat, John Fruth, immediately called the police to alert them that the boat did not belong to them.

"He was seeing the news media coverage of a vessel that had run aground," Sausalito police Sergeant Bill Fraass said. "The individuals did not want assistance from the Coast Guard but were stuck on a vessel that could go nowhere."

The boat, which had been stripped of its main sail that cost $4 million, can sleep up to six people and is available for charter at $5,000 a day.

Police were not able to confirm where the three were going, but it was supposed to be a "long trip" according to Reuters.

"We do have thefts of vessels throughout the area, but the theft of a vessel of this size is uncommon," Fraass said according to the Associated Press.
