A new non-profit group seeks to supplement something people using traditional food stamps cannot buy: pet food.

The donation-based program called Pet Food Stamps aims to provide pet food stamps to low-income families who could otherwise not afford to feed their pets.

"In these rough economic times, many pet owners are forced to abandon their beloved pet to the ASPCA, North Shore Animal League or other animal shelters due to the inability to pay for their basic food supply and care. There are over 50 million Americans who currently receive Food Stamps, many with dogs or cats, who simply cannot afford to feed their animals, and these cherished companions are dropped off at animal shelters where they will most likely be put to sleep," reads a statement on Pet Food Stamp's website.

Anyone who qualifies for traditional food stamps is able to apply for pet food stamps through the non-profit.

Founder Mark Okon launched the New York-based non-profit earlier this month. He said in an ABC News interview there has been lots of positive response to the program. The program's website states that thousands of applications are received each day. More than 45,000 pets have been signed up in the past two weeks.

Okon said the program is currently operating on funding from private donations but that he is seeking long-term corporate sponsorship and steady funding.

"We're not looking for government funding at this point," Okon told ABCNews.com. "Should the government be willing to provide assistance further down the line, we will look into it."

Each applicant will have their case assessed individually and, if approved, be awarded pet food for six months.

Accepted applicants will be able have pet food ordered on their behalf through Pet Food Direct, an independent retailer.
