Hyundai will attempt to become the first company to begin production of of hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions vehicles for fleet use.

South Korea's top automotive company plans on producing 1,000 units of the fuel cell vehicle by 2015 to private and public companies.

The ix35 Fuel Cell model, which is the hydrogen-powered version of Hyundai's Tucson sport utility SUV, will be mass produced starting March 1 according to Hyundai. The vehicle will be produced in the southeastern city of Ulsan.

"With the ix35 Fuel Cell vehicle, Hyundai is leading the way into the zero-emissions future," Kim Eok Jo, Hyundai's vice chairman, said in a press statement. "The ix35 Fuel Cell is the most eco-friendly vehicle in the auto industry and proves that hydrogen fuel cell technology in daily driving is no longer a dream."

Hyundai will start manufacturing fuel cell vehicles for consumer retail sales in 2015 when lower production costs and refueling stations are expected to come according to English.news.cn.

Fuel cell vehicles emit only water as they convert hydrogen into electricity. Governments all-around the world are focused on increasing regulations on greenhouse gases caused mainly by current internal combustion engines, which means fuel cell cars could become the new norm over the next decade.
