The 'American Gods' TV series got a lot of geeks excited. Legendary British writer Neil Gaiman's well-loved book was finally going to be made into a TV series. Now it seems that more of the British writer's works could be made into TV series as well!
STARZ TV Series. The new TV show based on Gaiman's 2001 best-selling novel will be coming to STARZ soon. The adaptation will debut on April 30 at 9 PM ET. The world debut will be at the SXSW festival in Austin on Mar. 11.
Gaiman told the Wall Street Journal that the new TV show will contain eight episodes. This will only cover around one-third of the book. The author even said, "Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, the showrunners, have done a remarkable job and watching Ian McShane bring Mr. Wednesday, who is Odin, to life is an absolute joy."
The TV series will more or less remain faithful to the 'American Gods' novel. The official synopsis from Starz provides the following:
"The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society's modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities."
Cast. According to a report by Den of Geek!, British actor Ricky Whittle will take the lead role of Shadow Moon. Emily Browning will play his dead wife, Laura Moon. Ian McShane will be playing Mr. Wednesday.
Pablo Schreiber will be Mad Sweeney while Yetide Badaki will play Bilquish. Corbin Bernsen will play an Old God named Vulcan as well. This character was not in the 'American Gods' novel.
Crispin Glober will play Mr. World, who is the "seemingly omniscient leader at the center of the New Gods coalition." Omid Abtahi will play Salim in season 1 and could become a regular for season 2. Gillian Anderson will also be on the show as Media. Other members of the cast include Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy, Demore Barnes as Mr. Ibis, and Kristin Chenoweth as Easter.
FremantleMedia North America Partnership. The 'American Gods' TV show is really coming together. In recent news, it was revealed that Neil Gaiman signed a multi-year first look deal with the content studio and producer FremantleMedia North America. This means that they now have the right to further pursue other adaptations of any (and hopefully all) of Gaiman's works before any other company for television.
Currently, the agreement covers all of the British writer's existing short stories and novels but could expand even beyond that in the future. The best part is Gaiman will be involved as a writer, producer, and in other creative capacities.
'American Gods' will officially debut to the world on April 30. The show looks to be very exciting and a good adaptation of Neil Gaiman's best-selling novel. What do you think about the show and the possibility of more TV shows? Share your thoughts and comments below!
