Chevrolet, an American automobile division of the American automaker General Motors, is now actively offering the very first unlimited plan for those who want to have unlimited internet access on their vehicle. For just $20 a month, a Chevy car can become a mobile OnStar LTE hotspot powered by AT&T.
Up to this point, monthly data via OnStar would set everyone back $10 for 1GB, $20 for 4GB and $40 for 10GB. Onstar is also offering a 250MB day pass for $5 and a 20GB pass that is usable over the course of 12 months for $150.
The automaker claims that this business venture thanks to an increase in in-car Wi-Fi usage in 2016. The company said that usage has leaped to over 200 percent from last year with over 4 million GB of data moving through its hotspots.
President of GM North America and Global Head of Chevrolet, said: "We have contractors bidding jobs in their Silverados, families streaming movies in their Suburbans and Malibus and everyone tapping into the cloud for music. "With the most affordable unlimited 4G LTE data plan in the auto industry, the widest availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and new connected services like OnStar AtYourService, our momentum can only grow."
Chevrolet's OnStar LTE connection is supported by AT&T and does not require a long-term contract, so members can easily cancel anytime. The tech is designed to be enjoyed by passengers, not drivers, but it's in demand, especially for families with children who want to stay connected while on the road.
As the very first automaker to offer 4G LTE connectivity on its entire lineup, the company has sold more than 3.1 million OnStar 4G LTE-connected cars since June 2014 and has more cars on the road already equipped with 4G LTE compared to other automakers.
The connected vehicle will provide additional revenue streams for automakers, making it the reason why Chevrolet is willing to forgo more income from various pricing tiers in this instance. Meanwhile, expect other automakers to roll out their unlimited options as people today are using more data in their vehicles, for movies, music, and maps.
