The Porsche Carrera GT was an iconic supercar that first came out in 2003. It sold for $440,000, and only 1,270 units of the car are available. Car enthusiast Doug DeMuro believes it is the greatest car ever made.
Road and Track reported that the Carrera GT faced a lot of stiff competition when it came out. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren had just come out, while the Ford GT was set to release any date. The Ferrari Enzo was also about to end its production, and the whole world believed that it was the supercar of the decade.
The Porsche Carrera GT sets itself apart from many of its competitors. Most apparent is it does not use forced induction and instead, relies on a naturally aspirated, motorsport-derived 5.7-liter V10 engine. Furthermore, unlike the Enzo, the Porsche used an old-fashioned and straightforward six-speed manual.
The SLR McLaren had a front-engine layout while the Carrera opted to put the motor in the middle. The Carrera was fun to drive for skilled drivers and was not something inexperienced drivers could have fun with. The car's engine had a beautiful roar which many believe to be the best sounding road car in history.
According to car enthusiast Doug DeMuro, the Porsche Carrera GT set an example. It was "the last real supercar made in large numbers with a true manual transmission."
The Carrera GT is also well-known for its outstanding engineering. It has a carbon-fiber tub and subframe along with its inboard suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes. DeMuro's full account can is available in the video below.
Unfortunately, the car just never seemed to click. Porsche was originally supposed to produce 1,500 units of this supercar but somehow, they decided to stop at 1,270 units. The German automaker was worried that it was too expensive, it had too much competition, and that there wouldn't be enough demand for the supercar.
In addition, the Carrera GT also had its fair share of infamous moments. There have been plenty of high-profile accidents involving the vehicle, as well as several high-profile deaths and lawsuits.
The Porsche Carrera GT is a truly iconic supercar, and perhaps DeMuro was correct in branding it as the greatest car ever made. What do you think about the Carrera GT? Share your thoughts and comments below.
