A new partnership between General Motors and AT&T will bring 4G LTE mobile Internet access to millions of new cars next year.

AT&T signed an agreement with GM to "provide a suite of safety, security, diagnostic and infotainment software services to a range of GM cars next year in the United States and Canada," the network provider announced Monday, according to Forbes' reporting from the Mobile World Congress.

The network services will go into more Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles in 2014, leading AT&T to work with GM and its OnStar subsidiary to plan on working together to develop 4G network-connected apps for future vehicles, the article said. A preview of some conceptual apps using the technology will be shown later this week at the Mobile World Congress, which is the wireless industry's annual "big event."

The new partnership and the designed-for-drivers apps developed will "enhance virtually every aspect of the driving and riding experience," said GM's Global Connected Consumer president Mary Chain, in a press release obtained by Engadget.

AT&T plans to invest $14 billion into their wireless network over the next three years, with a goal of reaching coverage of 300 million people by the end of 2014, the release stated.

The release did not state is any specifics on the type of apps which will be developed nor any contractual or financial details pertaining to the agreement.

Also unmentioned in the statement, as Forbes reported, is GM's current agreement with Verizon Wireless, which powers the existing OnStar service and "considering how vital coverage is to OnStar's safety and security services, Verizon's superior LTE coverage (273.5 million people versus 170 million for AT&T today) would seem to make them a logical choice for GM," analyst Charles Golvin said in a blog post.

"Apparently GM was convinced by AT&T's public commitment to cover 300 million US consumers by year end 2014 - in addition to the ability to use the same technology globally, and the superior performance of AT&T's network when LTE is unavailable," Golvin said.
