A skier was killed in British Columbia this week after getting caught in an avalanche in an out-of-bounds location near a mountain ski resort according to Canadian police.

The avalanche reportedly buried three skiers outside the controlled area location of the Revelstoke Mountain Resort according to Reuters. The ski resort is located near the southeastern part of the Canadian province.

"A number of the group were able to get out to summon further help and are speaking with RCMP investigators and search and rescue," said RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk according to The Canadian Press.

The two other skiers were rescued and uninjured by others in their group. Canada's CTV reported that the group, which consisted of five or six men, were skiing on the back side of the Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

"I don't know what equipment they were equipped with, but they did self-rescue," Moskaluk said, according to The Canadian Press.

The incident, which was witnessed by resort staff members, occurred between 1 p.m and 1:30 p.m. according to CNN.

Police have yet to reveal the name of the victim. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated on Feb. 22 that they're expecting to recover the body of the skier sometime this weekend.

Canadian Avalanche Centre forecasts state a high danger rating in many locations near the province, which means travel isn't "recommended" in the location the men were skiing.

The rating also means that natural avalanches are likely and human-triggered avalanches "are very likely" according to The Canadian Press.

The areas where the danger is high right now include the South Coast, Sea-to-Sky, the North and South Columbia, Monashees and Selkirks, Kootenay-Boundary, the Purcells and the South Rockies according to The Canadian Press.
