A Supreme Court justice, a former senator, and a court aide, all three sister, were convicted on Feb. 21 of public corruption on charges for using state employees in political campaign work according to the Associated Press.

Supreme Court Justice Jane Orie, the youngest of the three, was convicted last year, and is currently serving a sentence that could last 10 years in prison.

The Pittsburgh sisters claim the charges were "overblown" or "outright lies" when asked by a Democratic prosecutor.

Janine Orie and Senator Joan Orie Melvin have yet to be sentenced, although their lawyer said he didn't like the set verdict and planned to appeal according to the Associated Press.

Jurors weren't able to research a decision on one count, a charge of official oppression against Melvin, who has been accused of firing her law clerk when he objected to doing political work back in 2003 the report claims.

The former senator was sentenced last year to 2 to 10 years for using her state-paid staff to run her campaigns, though she was acquitted of having them campaign for Melvin, then a lower appellate court judge, who was running for the Supreme Court in 2003 and 2009 according to the Associated Press.

"It's all pretty unbelievable," said John Burkoff, a university of Pittsburgh law professor who has closely followed the cases. "Whatever you thought about the Orie sisters, whether you liked or didn't like them, you have to look at all of this as tragic."

The three were also found guilty of theft of services and criminal conspiracy.
