Tech giant Apple finally gets approval for another technology patent. The patent is described to have new potentials designs on embedding fingerprint scanning into a smartphone's display which could debut on the iPhone 8.
New Apple patent describes technology on embedded fingerprint scanners in smartphone displays. The patent was filed by the tech firm during the first quarter of 2015. The patent was granted approval only on Tueday which was also published on the US Patent and Trademark Office's website according to a report by Patently Apple.
The design described in the patent does not involve just integrating the scanner into the screen but also enabling close to real-time user authentication. This will allow for more seamless transactions and other ID-sensitive processes. The technology basically allows fingerprints to be scanned while authentication processes run in the background.
The patent reads, "An electronic device may include a touch display that includes at least one display layer, and at least one transparent conductive layer thereon defining touch sensing pixels." It further says, "The electronic device may also include a finger biometric sensor carried by the touch display and that includes a finger biometric sensing layer that includes an array of transparent conductive finger biometric sensing pixels capacitively coupled to the at least one transparent conductive layer of the touch display."
The patent supports claims and speculations that Apple is working on putting fingerprint scanning technology underneath the display of smartphones. This technology will allow users to have their fingerprint scanned anywhere on the touchscreen display.
Given that the patent has been given approval by the US Patent and Trademark Office, it is highly possible that the much awaited iPhone 8 could sport this technology. The iPhone 8 will also allegedly feature a bezel-less display, no home button, a very much improved 3D Touch, water and dust resistance, and wireless charging capabilities.
