The Razzie Awards happened a day before the Oscars and showcased the worst films of the previous year. The documentary Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party and the film BvS: Dawn of Justice were stood out as both received the same number of awards.
Hillary's America and BvS tied for number of awards received at the Razzies. The critically panned superhero film Batman v Superman and the anti-Clinton documentary Hillary's American both received four awards at the 37th Golden Raspberry Awards. The announcement of the winners happened last Saturday, February 25, a day before the Academy Awards.
The highlight of the 37th Razzies is really Batman v Superman. The superhero film, which is the sequel to 2013's Man of Steel, is considered to be the worst film of 2016. Although the film's opening weekend is the eighth biggest opening of all time, the film is said to be so bad that the following week saw an 81.2% box-office drop.
Batman v Superman's Razzie awards include worst remake, rip-off, or sequel and worst screen team-up. The worst supporting actor award when to Jesse Eisenberg who portrayed Lex Luthor in the film.
The awards come after weeks of speculation that Ben Affleck, who portrays Batman in DC's extended universe (DCEU), would be leaving a role. Affleck was initially given the director's chair for a stand-alone unnamed Batman film but declined due to reasons that remain unclear. It has been said that the actor would rather concentrate on portraying the Dark Knight. Director Mat Reeves of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fame will be handling the director role.
It is unknown if Razzie awards that BvS won will affect Affleck's attitude towards continuing to portray Batman. The actor is actually the very first recipient of the Razzie Redeemer Award which goes to previous Razzie award winners who have since bounced back in their careers.
