Breaking tradition, Samsung did not launch the highly anticipated Galaxy S8 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Instead, the South Korean company teased the upcoming smartphone. Soon after, they sent out invitations as it seems the flagship device will have its own unveiling event on March 29 in NYC.
Samsung Galaxy S8 will be the company's first major flagship device following the reputation-damaging Galaxy Note 7 disaster that required a massive recall. This perhaps was a decision made in order for the South Korean company to give extra time for final safety testing of its device.
Invitations were sent last Sunday, featuring a silhouette of a smartphone captioned "unbox your phone." However, the invitations only pointed to an event in New York City on March 29, with no specific reference to the flagship device. But based on the teaser and tagline, it all points to the Samsung Galaxy S8.
Based on the video above, it suggests that Samsung might follow suit LG's design, a 2:1 screen ratio with narrow bezels, reports CNET. Thus, we might be getting a phone with a larger screen-to-body ratio. In fact, this coincides with earlier "leaks" and rumors of the upcoming flagship device.
Just last week, a fleet spec of leaks revealed possible features that Samsung Galaxy S8 might carry. Reportedly, there might be 2 versions of the unit, a Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Both could run on Android 7.1 Nougat mated, depending on geography, with either Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 or Samsung's own Exynos chipset.
The leak also indicated the battery which could be 3,000 mAh with both fast charging via USB Type-C and wireless charging. It could come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, expandable via a microSD card slot.
For the camera, consumers could expect a 12-megapixel rear with dual-LED flash and 8-megapixel front camera. And an iris scanner. The Samsung Galaxy S8 should be IP68 water- and dust-resistant.
Plus, it could be equipped with a fingerprint scanner. Although a possibility of the Note 7 iris scanner making it to the flagship device isn't ruled out.
But these are all leaks. The only way for us to know for sure is to wait until Samsung Galaxy S8's official unveiling, come March 29.
