Xiaomi has been working on developing its own in-house chipset for several years now. The rumor about this plan started circulating way back in 2015. Speculations that Xiaomi has started working with other semiconductor companies surfaced when it was discovered that the two Xiaomi employees who are working for research and technical development have also worked for Beijing Pinecone Electronics, a prominent chipmaker from China.
Xiaomi's effort to develop its own chipset reached fruition in March 2016 with the release of the Xiaomi Redmi 2A, the first Xiaomi device to be powered by a Leadcore chipset. Many tech analysts believe that this partnership eventually went on to develop and produce what is now the Xiaomi Pinecone processor, according to Gizmo China.
Two Pinecone chipsets are expected to be revealed. These are the Pinecone V670 and the V970. The V670 is tipped to be released on the mid-tiered market segment. It has an octa-core A53 processor and a Mali-T860MP2 graphics processor.
On the other hand, the Pinecone V970 is expected to be released to the high-end market. The chipset is designed using a 10nm process and packs a 12-core GPU. The Mali-G71 packs a two-cluster configuration with four Cortex A73 and four Cortex A53 cores. According to NDTV, Xiaomi has been working closely with Samsung in terms of designing the V970 chipset.
Xiaomi is expected to hold the conference at the Beijing National Convention Center. The announcement will kick off at 2 PM local time.
