Honda has officially announced that its all new 2017 Honda Civic Type-R will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The future model will be the first Type R that will be sold in the U.S. market and is being built to set a new model for front-wheel-drive performance cars.
The car will be the front and center of Honda's presence at the show, and the automaker has confirmed that the new model will be on the newly released tenth-generation Civic. It will be equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter VTEC engine same with it predecessor. The engine will be paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox and will get an option of CVT.
The production will begin at Honda's UK plant located in Swindon this summer and the car will be exported around the world including the U.S. This is also the first time that any Type-R Honda has officially gone sale in North America.
Honda claims that the current generation of 2017 Honda Civic Type-R which never made it to the United States can produce 350 horsepower. The car is anticipated to get a huge scoop in the bonnet, flared wheel arches and an aggressive rear wing which makes the vehicle look like a rally car. Honda said that it would receive the Type R badging at the rear and in the front grille.
Test mules have also been spotted undergoing performance testing at the Nurburgring race track in Germany equipped with the large rear wing. It is expected that the car can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 5 seconds, that's faster than the outgoing model.
Styling features of the car will include wider vents, a new air intake on the bonnet, and a smoked LED headlights. New skirts made of carbon fiber will give the vehicle a more aggressive look, 20-inches alloy wheels wrapped with Continental Sport Contact tires. At the back, a three exhaust outlets are installed.
Honda said that the 2017 Honda Civic Type-R will have a starting price of £30,000 and will be offered with a GT trim level like the current car. It will take on the Ford Focus RS, VW Golf R, Audi RS3 Sportback, and the Mercedes-AMG A45.
