A man was charged $760 for an ambulance that arrived too late to save his father according to the Associated Press.
Durand Ford Jr. stated he received a bill this week from the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Service Department. His father, 71-year-old Durand Ford Sr. passed away while waiting nearly 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive on Jan. 1.
NBC Washington reports that the 911 call was placed at 1:25 a.m., and it took a fire truck approximately nine minutes to respond. An ambulance was not available right away however, and one did not arrive until 1:58 a.m. according to the report.
By then Ford Sr. had passed away, and his son feels angry and upset over the fact that his father's life could have been saved.
"I'm disturbed that we even received this bill," said Ford Jr. to NBC Washington. "My sister and I are still grieving about the situation. (We're) very angry about what happened and the service we did not receive from the district."
City police officials are busy looking into the matter.
Ford Jr. recently spoke out in January after learning that D.C. ambulances were staffed at a low level on the night his father died. Over 50 district firefighters called out sick according to Yahoo.
A spokesperson for the fire department denied that there was a "coordinated sick-out that night" according to NBC Washington.
"This seems quite unusual, and I will help the family resolve this matter," DC City Councilwoman Yvette Alexander told NBC Washington.
