Approximately 19,000 BMW i3 REx units are set to be recalled by BMW due to fire hazards that were seen with the vehicle. The recall issue was made by BMW and NHTSA or the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration.
According to CBS Detroit, the recall order was made for the BMW I3 2014-2017 models which are equipped with the Range Extender (REx). These are also the cars that were manufactured from March 2014-December 2016.
BMW Blog reported that BMW and NHTSA released a recall bulletin that mentioned that "the fuel- tank vent line which may rub against the ribbed wire protection sleeve of the battery positive cable, creating a hole in the vent and causing a fuel vapor leak. In the presence of ignition source, this can increase the risk of fire."
The BMW I3 REx is powered by the same 647cc 2-cylinder engine that is also used in the BMW C650 GT maxi scooter. The range extender operates only once the battery level begins to drop on a specific point and it acts as a generator in order to produce electricity and extend its range to around 320 km more.
The tank size is 2.4 gallons but the software will automatically shut off when 1.9 gallons has already been used. The BMW I3 REx has a total range of 240 km and was classified as a plug-in hybrid by the EPA.
During the launch in 2014, BMW clarified that the range extender is made not for traveling long-distance. It is only considered as an emergency back-up until such time drivers reached the next recharging station.
As of today, there are no known incidents relating to the fire hazard discovered. However, BMW will start notifying owners of these vehicles and start replacing the fuel vent lines free of charge. The recall will commence in April. For further information, visit the www.safercar.gov or call the car manufacturer at 800-525-7417.
