Volkswagen unveiled their new, special-edition GSR Beetle at the Chicago Auto Show today to pay homage to the classic 1970's black and yellow GSR according to a company press release.
The new model is powered by a 210 hp version of VW's 2.0 turbo with approximately 207 lb.-ft. of torque mated to either a dual-clutch or 6-speed manual.
VW stated that the GSR name stands for Gelb Schwarzer Renner, but the vehicle is also known as the "Yellow Black Racer." Only 3,500 models were made originally, specifically for the German market, and that's the same amount Volkswagen will release this fall all over the world according to the press release. Only this time a select number of vehicles will make their way to the U.S.
Volkswagen stated that the new vehicle can go 0 to 60 in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph according to the company press release.
The old model had a yellow body and matte lack truck and hood, where as the new one is yellow with a black trunk, hood, roof, and mirrors. The vehicle features a yellow and black spoiler as well.
The new model will also comes equipped with 19-inch "Tornado" aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/40 tires. The original model had 15-inch steel wheels and 175-section tires, which were common even on sport vehicles in the 70's.
The GSR is based on the Beetle Turbo with Sunroof and Sound model which means it will be equipped with the Fender Premium Audio System, a panoramic sunroof, and Keyless access with a push-button start.
Bluetooth connectivity, a Media Device Interface with an iPod cable, and aluminum-alloy pedals are also standard with the new GSR. Pricing for the new model will be announced this summer and Volkswagen will release a limited number of the vehicle this fall.
