Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn was airlifted to a hospital after she crashed during the opening day super-G at the Alpine Ski World Championships in Australia according to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.
Vonn has reportedly suffered a "complex knee injury," according to CNN who confirmed the report with the hospital she was taken to. The injuries she suffered are not life-threatening, but no word has been released on whether the skier will be able to compete ever again.
The skier lost her balance on a hard landing, lost her ski, and slid off course into a gate before coming to a stop according to the Associated Press.
Vonn was attended to by race medical workers around 10 minutes after the crash in Schladming, Austria before she was transported via helicopter to a local hospital. Austrian ski federation president Peter Schroecksnadel stated that doctors told him Vonn tore her cruciate and lateral ligaments.
"That's the only injury she has, nothing besides this," said Schroecksnadel to the Associated Press.
Vonn is one of the most recognizable skiers around the world and won the downhill gold medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. She is also a four-time overall Alpine Ski World Cup champion according to ESPN.
Vonn had trailed Tina Maze of Slovenia, who won the gold, by 0.12 seconds before the crash. The race, which was postponed 3 ½ hours because of fog, resumed after a 15-minute delay.
This is the sixth straight major championship Vonn has dealt with injuries according to the Associated Press.
