Apple Tops Samsung As Best U.S. Mobile Phone Company For The First Time, iPhone 4S, 5 Sales Play Huge Roll

Apple has finally beat Samsung as the top selling mobile phone company in the U.S. according to research by the firm Strategic Analytics.  This marks the first time Apple has ever beat Samsung for the top spot.

"Apple's success has been driven by its popular ecosystem of iPhones and App Store, generous carrier subsidies, and extensive marketing around the new iPhone 5 model," says Strategic Analytics executive director Neil Mawston in a press statement. Along with the iPhone 5, Apple offers discounted or free versions of its iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models. "

The top-selling phone of last quarter was Apple's iPhone 5 according to data from NPD Group. Samsung's Galaxy S3 took second place, followed by the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, and the Samsung Galaxy S2.

The iPhone 5, which was released this past September, represented 43 percent of all iPhone sales in the fourth quarter. Despite their overwhelming success of the new iPhone device, Apple's stock actually declined from 41 percent to 39 percent since the same time last year according to CNet.com.

Approximately 52 million mobile devices were sold, a 4 percent increase from last year. Apple sold 34 percent of that number, shipping out 17.7 million devices. This number is an increase compared to the 25 percent they sold last year according to the report.

Samsung sits firmly in second place, after selling 16.8 million phones, representing 32 percent of the market share according to USA Today. Samsung had previously been the top-selling country in the nation since 2008.

Apple also topped the consumer sales list according to new data from NPD Group. Samsung did honorably however, seeing a 117 percent increase in unit-sales volume according to the report, thanks to their line of Samsung devices like the popular Galaxy S3.

"This was a good performance from Samsung, as its market share rose 5 points from 27 percent a year earlier, but it was not enough to hold off a surging Apple," Mawston said in a statement. "Samsung had been the number one mobile phone vendor in the U.S. since 2008, and it will surely be keen to recapture that title in 2013 by launching improved new models such as the rumored Galaxy S4."
