Aspen city council members have decided on a unique solution to get drivers to slow down by putting a 14 mph speed limit sign up.
Council members stated too many driver's ignore the current 25 mph speed limit that appears down Main Street, which often gets jammed by people looking to avoid Highway 82 to a report the Associated Press.
These drivers repeatedly ignore posted speed limit signs, and city council members have tried many different solutions to get them to slow down. They've added stop signs, increased police force, and offered bus services, but nothing has worked.
Finally, they were forced to lower the speed limit to 25 mph, but drivers still drove the same way. In an act of desperation, they're now set to lower the speed limit to under 20 mph according to a report by The Aspen Times.
Originally Mayor Mick Ireland proposed lowering the limit to 18 mph, "because the number is out of the ordinary for a speed limit and will attract a driver's attention," according to Yahoo. Council members liked his idea, but decided to take it one step further by dropping the speed limit down to 14 mph.
"We are still receiving complaints about speeding," Trish Aragon, city engineer said to The Aspen Times. "Although from an engineering perspective, we don't see that they're speeding. But the perception still is that vehicles are speeding through the neighborhood."
Aragon stated that a city will test out the 14 mph speed limit sign to see if it has an impact on city travel, and if it works, the sign is there to stay. If not, they'll just have to try something different to get people to drive slower.
Multiple speed bumps may also be added and additional stop signs according to the Inquisitr. Residents don't seem to think that the reduced speed limit is going to affect the way people drive.
"They still say, 'We don't care what this shows; they're still going too fast, in our view.' That's what the community has told us," Aragon said.
