Apple finally released iOS 6.1 this week, and it has already been jailbroken for certain Apple devices. Unfortunately the iPhone 5 isn't one of them according to a report by Cnet.com.

The tech website Redmond Pie stated that the RedsnOw version 0.9 15b3 can break through certain devices with iOS 6, but the jailbreak requires your device to be tethered according to the report. This means you'll have to connect to a computer each time you restart.
The program works for certain devices like the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the fourth generation iPod Touch, but not the iPhone 5 or the latest iPad or iTouch devices.
Apple users shouldn't be too discouraged however, as Redmond Pie reports that an untethered jailbreak could debut as early as the first week of February. The report listed Feb. 3 as a possible date for an untethered jailbreak to be released, but this has not been confirmed yet.
The news comes just a week after a new iPhone team called the "evad3rs" formed, focused on working to jailbreak the iOS 6.1 format. The team has set up their own Twitter account and team members have tweeted to each other regarding their progress for the whole world to see.

Apple users received some bad news this weekend as well, as the U.S. government decided to make unlocking cellphone devices illegal. As reported by The New York Times, the new act essentially states that if you unlock your phone from a specific carrier, without the carrier's permission, you will face some form of legal punishment.
If you already unlocked your phone before Jan. 26 then your fine, but if you do so now, the first offense is a fine that could reach up to $2,500. Unlocking a phone with the intention of selling it could equal a fine of $500,000 and prison time according to ABC.
