When it comes to lighting technology, Audi is in a class of its own. With their xenon plus and LED headlights, Audi provides "excellent illumination" on the road. According to a new press release issued by Audi this week, vehicle lighting from the company in the upcoming future will react even more precisely to road conditions and will feature electronic control.
Audi plans on completing the first step of this process this year by introducing innovative matrix LED headlights by the end of 2013.
"Daytime running lights that consist of white light-emitting diodes are a safety and design feature that reflects Audi's frontrunner role among the competition," said Audi in the press release. "They made their debut in the Audi A8 W12 in 2004."
Little did they know back then that this was just the first step in a process that would lead to a unique and recognizable headlight design. Daylight running lights are now offered in all of the brand's model series. Each model, the light-intense diodes offer many new degrees of freedom according to the press release.
The introduction of full-LED headlights in the A6, A7 Sportback, and A8, gives a unique and "unmistakable styling and resolute" look. Smaller LED lights can be placed in lines, and according to Audi various lighting functions can be applied by consumers through controlling the diodes.
"We always find a way to perfectly harmonize technology and styling." said Cesar Muntada Roura of Audi Exterior Design in the press release. "It is our understanding of one another's areas of competence that make us so strong."
LED headlights were introduced in 2008 in the R8 vehicle, and can be found in the new A3 today. LED lights have been used in vehicles like the R 15 TDI Le Mans sport proto type race car in 2010 and in the next generation race car, the R18.
LED technology can also be found in taillights for most Audi vehicles, as a standard or optional feature depending on the vehicle.
Audi states that Xenon headlights provide brighter, lighter, and better illumination than say halogen headlights with "incandescent bulbs." The energy consumed from Xenon lights by 20 percent, thus they have a much longer life span. Xenon lights are also mercury free.
Whether it's the xenon plus or LED, Audi headlights and taillights found in their newest models make a statement. The brand offers lighting effects not found in other vehicles, and will only improve in the near future.
