"Viper is Chrysler," said CEO Sergio Marchionnne during a ceremony at the plant in a video posted on Chrysler's media site. "If there is a car that defines what we are as a carmaker out there to people who are into carmaking, this is the car."
CEO Ralph Giles joined Marchionne and other employees to present the first SRT Viper to Scott Thomas, 40, of Oklahoma City. Thomas is president of a metals company called APMEX, Inc.
Thomas purchased model #001 for approximately $300,000 at the Barrett-Jackson Orange County Auction in June 2012. All proceeds went to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Center according to Chrysler.
The Viper team dedicated the final line to former Chrysler Group executive Dan Knott, who passed away in 2012 by unveiling a plaque in his honor. Knott served as Vice President of the SRT Product Team and was "instrumental" in the development of past versions of the Viper according to Chrysler.
The plaque features a quote by Knott which reads "Today, we are a real car company again." Knott made the statement the same day the 2013 Viper was approved in 2012.
Over 150 employees assemble each component on approximately 12 vehicles a day with "complete attention to detail and quality" according to Chrysler.
The all-new vehicle features an 8.4-liter V10 engine that delivers 640 horsepower with 600 lb.-ft. of torque according to Chrysler. The base price for the Viper is $99,390 after including the destination fee.
Production for the Viper started on Dec. 5, 2012 and all shipments are expected to start sometime in February.
