A Kern County sheriff's dispatcher confirmed that a shooting has occurred at Taft Union High School in Kern County, California.

At least two have been shot and injured by an unknown gunman that has been arrested according to Reuters. One of the victims had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital, while the other refused treatment.

The shooting comes under a month after the tragedy at a Connecticut elementary school in which gunman Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six teachers before taking his own life.

A SWAT team was sent to investigate around 9 a.m. local time after authorities were notified of an "active shooter inside the building" according to an unnamed officer with the Taft Sherriff's Department who spoke with the Daily News.

Sheriff deputies have gone room-by-room to secure the school which is located 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles according to ABC.

"I am deeply saddened and troubled by news of the shooting," said Congressman Kevin McCarthy to CNN, whose district includes Taft. "(My wife) Judy and I offer our prayers to the victims, their families and the entire Taft community."

The shooting happened in the science building at Taft High School.

People from inside the school had called local news outlets to give an accurate update of the situation. Many students and teachers reported that they were hiding in closets until it was deemed safe to come out by the SWAT team.

Parents have been called by the school about the incident and have been urged to pick up their children after they had been evacuated to the school football field according to Reuters.

The incident in Connecticut has sparked a heated national debate over gun control in the U.S. and whether or not something needs to be done to keep schools safer.
