More details on the Land Rover's upcoming vehicle are now available. It is actually said to be a mid-size SUV that is a cross between the Evoque and Sport and called the Velar.
The 2018 Velar. The name Velar means "veil" or "cover" in Italian. The name was used by the company on its vehicle prototypes back in the 1960s. It is designed to compete directly with BMW's X6 and the Porsche Macan.
According to automobile website Autocar, the Velar is based off the Jaguar F-Pace and will share the Jaguar Land Rover's IQ platform. It will come in a variety of engines, specifically four-cylinder and six-cylinder turbodiesel and petrol engines and the supercharged six-cylinder engine. It could possibly sport an inline-6 engine or even a V8.
The Velar was initially called the Evoque XL, a five-passenger SUV that is closely related to the Jaguar F-Pace. It will be longer and roomier than the Macan with all trims coming in four-wheel drive.
Looking at the Velar's ground clearance and its overhangs, it is expected to be able to perform off-road. However, it will not be sporting a separate low-range gear set just like the F-Pace and other more expensive Land and Range Rovers.
The Velar will feature an ultra-modern aluminum body. It will be manufactured alongside the Range Rover Sport and Jaguar F-Pace at Land Rover's assembly plant in Solihull, West Midlands. According to insiders, the company is confident that the Velar will be able to meet the growing demand for mid-size SUVs.
The Velar is expected to bridge the price gap between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport which are priced at £40,000 and £80,000 respectively. It is speculated that car manufacturer will officially unveil the Velar at the Geneva Auto Show. The auto show is set to start in more or less three weeks.
