If you live in New York and you're constantly worried about catching your subway, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has an app for you. New Yorkers can now use a MTA Subway Time app for smartphones to check the subway arrivals for six different lines according to The New York Times.
The app covers 156 stations on the No. 1 through 6 lines, will reportedly offer arrival estimates to the exact minute, based on same technology that is used for stations countdown clocks that hang above train platforms.

The app is now available for download on Apple products like iPads and iPhone devices and a desktop version has also been made available for those who want to really plan ahead.
"Today is the day that generations of dreamers and futurists have waited for," Joseph J. Lhota, the authority's chairman, said in a statement to The New York Times. "The days of rushing to a subway station only to find yourself waiting motionless in a state of uncertainty are coming to an end."
The app will be extremely helpful for passengers who want to decide for example if they have time to grab something to eat or to grab a newspaper to read on the ride to their next destination.
MTA advises users to use the app before they reach the station however, as many stations don't have cell phone service which would make the app obsolete. You would then need to rely on the overhead clocks as mentioned before.

For users of most lettered lines, there is no timetable as to when an app will be created to help passengers make their train on time. Most of these trains still use older, separate, signal technology according to Engadget.com. It could take another six to 12 months before they have a solution for these lines.
The app will not provide directions for users who need to connect to a different line or where to go after getting off their train. Experts have no current timetable or confirmation that developers are working on adding this aspect to the app.
