Ford Motors announced this week that they will be spending close to $773 million on new equipment and expanding manufacturing plants which will create close to 2,350 jobs in Michigan. Ford is hoping to invest over $6.2 billion by 2015 which would create 12,000 more jobs.
"Even as we wrap up an incredibly busy year of capacity expansions and product launches, we are continuing to look to the future," said Jim Tetreault, Ford vice president of North America Manufacturing in a press release.
The plants that will be expanded include the Michigan Assembly Plant, Dearborn Stamping Plant, Flat Rock Assembly, and Sterling Axle Plant according to a press release issued by Ford. Around $59.4 million will be invested in the Michigan Plant, meanwhile $305 million will go towards the Dearborn Plant. Around $161 million will be put towards expanding the Flat Rock plant and $86 million towards to Sterling Axle facility.
"These investments, many of which are already under way, will ensure our southeast Michigan manufacturing facilities can support our aggressive growth plans," said Tetreault in the press release.
The latest investment will let Ford keep over 3,240 jobs, and currently the automotive manufacturer employs over 170,000 people in 65 plants worldwide.
Additionally, by June the company will bring a new stamping press on line at the Michigan Plant, while also installing equipment for four new stamping presses at the Dearborn plant. The expansion at the Flat Rock Plant will allow the company to manufacture the new Fusion vehicles in 2013.
Ford started the expansion for its facilities earlier this past year to "increase Ford's capacity to provide transmissions and axles" for vehicles like the popular F-Series trucks the company stated in the press release.
Van Dyke Transmission will receive $87.7 million to upgrade machinery and equipment to create expansions for the 6F35 and 6F50 transmissions as well according to Ford.
