Two young boys died and their father was critically injured this week after a deadly crash split their car in half in Santa Fe Springs, California.
The crash took place around 6 p.m. on Dec. 21 on Los Nietos Road new Norwalk Boulevard according to ABC News. An 11-year-old boy died after he was "ejected" from his father's black Honda Civic, and his 13-year-old brother was found deceased in the front passenger seat.
The impact of the crash was so drastic that it caused the vehicle to split in half according to State Police officials.
"I saw the car, and I only saw half the car. It didn't dawn on me that it was only half a car, I just saw the man in the car," said witness Anthony Marquez to ABC News. "I heard him yelling out his son's name, I looked down the street and I saw the other half of the car. I ran down as fast as I could to see the little boy, I tried waking him up but he was already gone."
Local witnesses told police that the car was travelling well above the speed limit when it entered oncoming traffic. The vehicle then slammed into a power pole, causing the entire vehicle to split in half.
Witnesses said that the vehicle could have been cut off at the last second, causing the vehicle to go crashing into the pole, but police officials could not confirm that was the case.
"They were going at least 75 mph. They had to be racing," said witness Anthony Marquez to NBC. "The car that was cut off began to swerve and hit a pole, said Marquez, who stopped at the scene. I saw the man in the car, he was crying out for his son. I looked down the street and saw the other half of the car."
The 33-year-old father was hospitalized for critical injuries, but was in stable condition later that night according to NBC. Police will now be looking to acquire a surveillance video from several businesses near the crash scene.
