BMW announced today they'll be recalling almost 250,000 X5 SUVs worldwide due to potential power-steering issues.
The recall affects X5 xDrive 35d vehicles with diesel engines released in 2009 through 2012 according to the Associated Press.
Over 30,000 vehicles will be recalled in the U.S. alone according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. BMW stated today that a bolt could come loose or break and cause the loss of power-assisted steering.
If the power-assisted steering goes in the vehicle, the chances of an accident increase drastically. The SUVs would still have manual steering, but using it takes more of an effort when turning the wheel according to the BMW website, especially when driving under 35 mph.
No crashes or injuries have been reported in Canada or the U.S. It is currently unknown if accidents have occurred in overseas countries.
Over 5,500 vehicles are being recalled in Canada according to Canadian safety agency documents. The problem was first discovered in Canada where around 85 complaints were filed by dealerships and through warranty claims.
BMW dealerships will now work to replace bolts and add coating to keep the bolts from coming loose. Letters will be sent to BMW owners about the recall this coming January.
In June, BMW was forced to recall around 2,600 X5 vehicles from 2012 through 2013 models because of a power-steering fluid leak. The problem could cause a fire if a leak does occur according to report by the The New York Times.
