The new 2014 Chevrolet Spark was revealed for the first time yesterday, just a day before it had its first official showcase at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. The new car includes a number of new technologies, performance enhancements and will be priced at $25,000.
The news was revealed in a company press release issues by General Motors. The Spark, along with the new Chevy Volt, accounts for over 50 percent of the plug-in electric vehicle sales in the US the company reports.
"When you engineer a technology-filled, all-electric mini car that goes from zero-to-60 mph in less than eight seconds, customers won't miss the gas," said Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America. "The Volt and now the Spark EV show that Chevrolet not only knows EVs better than anyone else, we also know how to help customers get the most out of their EV experience."
The new EV vehicle is expected to have one, if not the best battery range for its segment and is also the first electric vehicle to include SAE Combo DC Fast Charging capability. This allows the new Spark vehicle to charge its battery to around 80-percent in under 20 minutes.
The interior has been updated as well for the Spark which not include features that Chevy felt is necessary for cars to have in this day and age. Some of those functions include a new display system with two reconfigurable, high-resolution color LCD screens. Both screens are 7-inches and can be used in a number of different ways like playing movies or connecting to video game systems.
The vehicle also comes with an "exclusive" MyLink radio option that acts as a smartphone infotainment system. Functions that they new and standard MyLink feature can provide include Pandora, Stitcher, and the BringGo navigation system.
The vehicle includes a GM-constructed drive unit and electric motor that can achieve a total of 130 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The 20-kWh lithium battery will make the new EV hard to beat compared to other cars in its segment as far as range performance goes.
