The National Electric Vehicle Sweden company said this week that they are approximately 18 months away from releasing a all-electronic Saab convertible vehicle in China modeled after the iconic Saab 9-3.

Saab's new owner NEVS re-stated Monday that they are planning on creating a new brand of vehicles no later than 2014 and vehicles could be released earlier if things move quicker than expected.

The blog website Swadeology reported in an interview with NEVS's Mikael Ostlund that the company not only has high expectations for the electric car, but could also introduce a gas-powered vehicle in the near future as well to "bring in extra cash flow and to ensure consumers didn't forget about the brand ."

"We are evaluating the possibility to start production around next summer of a 9-3 with a traditional powertrain," said Ostlund.

The news about the new convertible was first reported by European car magazine Autoweek which also stated the car could also be sold elsewhere around the world including the U.S. and Sweden once the first line of vehicles are completed. Other cars are being considered as well including a SportCombi variations of the 9-3 that may be powered by GM's internal-combustion engines.

No further information has been released about a new gas-powered vehicle just yet, but the fact that it is being considered has to be good news for Saab enthusiast that thought the brand was left for dead this past summer.

The company also has plans to make new cars at the Saab factory in Trollhattan, Sweden while producing the batteries for the car in China. The new cars will contain the Saab emblem until the company creates its own, unrelated emblem to the automaker's iconic griffin emblem.
